Preventing Electrical Fires. How safe is your home right now?

Most fires, including electrical fires, are avoidable. Here are some suggestions to keep your home and family safe.

1. Install a carbon monoxide detector on every level of your home. Carbon monoxide detectors are becoming more affordable and simple to install. They protect you from harmful fumes and can detect certain types of fires faster than a traditional smoke detector.

2. Use extension cords only when necessary, and make sure all of your appliances are plugged directly into a wall outlet. Using an extension cord can result in overheating and fire. When using extension cords, make sure they are not worn or frayed, and avoid putting them in places where they could be pinched or damaged, such as under a rug.

3. Check your smoke detectors on a regular basis and replace the batteries as needed. Smoke detectors should be less than ten years old, with a battery that is no older than six months. If your home is up to date, you will have one in each bedroom, on each floor, and in the garage. These smoke detectors should be linked together so that they all sound at the same time during a fire. To test the alarms, press the "Test" button and listen to each one.

4. A qualified electrician should inspect your electrical system. Over time, electrical panels, switches, and outlets deteriorate and can become fire hazards. Call Advanced Electric Inc. if you're unsure whether you need an outlet installed, your electrical panel checked, or smoke detectors installed. Our skilled electricians are prepared to ensure that your home is in good working order.
